Become a Certified Ethical Hacker

A certified ethical hacker, sometimes referred to as “counter hacking,” refers to someone who has been trained to penetrate computer and network security systems. The difference is that they do it with the goal of helping a company or organization identify security weaknesses and potential threats. This is where the term “ethical” comes in. A certified ethical hacker is not hacking with the purpose of causing damage, but instead to provide helpful insight. In order to become an ethical hacker, you must obtain an ethical hacker certification.

Ethical Hacker Certification

The certified ethical hacker certification is provided by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council). The EC-Council is best known for providing certification services and provides Information Technology (IT) certificates for a wide variety of occupations. Most of these IT certificates center around information security, encryption, and investigation. Some of the concepts learned during the training program include:

  • Intrusion Detection
  • Policy Creation
  • Social Engineering
  • DDoS Attacks
  • Buffer Overflows
  • Virus Creation

Once the training program is completed, students will be expected to pass the ethical hacker examination before becoming certified.

Ethical Hacker Examination

Certification is obtained after attending training from an accredited training center or self study and passing the ethical hacker examination. If a certificate candidate opts to go the self study route, he/she must provide evidence of at least 2 years of relevant information security work experience. The examination reviews all the material covered throughout the training.

Ethical Hacker Salary

According to Indeed.com, the average annual salary for a certified ethical hacker is over $100,000. This figure is slightly higher than the average salary of other related IT occupations. Certified ethical hackers are often contracted by smaller businesses for limited time periods or by larger companies and corporations to provide ongoing security analysis and penetration testing as products and systems are continuously developed.

Certified Ethical Hacker Jobs

The job market for certified ethical hackers is quickly growing. The future job outlook for certified ethical hackers could be identified as “good,” at worst. Many argue that this is the hottest and most upcoming occupation of all IT career paths. That is because more transactions and processes are moving towards digital frameworks and away from older analog ways of life. That means more companies will be investing in securing their networks and identifying vulnerabilities.
